GEO GLOSSARY
A search result where the user gets their answer directly on the results page or in an AI-generated summary, without clicking through to any website.
AI Overviews and answer engines are explicitly designed to synthesize a complete answer, which removes the incentive to click through that a plain list of links used to create. For many informational and comparison questions, the AI answer is now the entire interaction.
Click-through and traffic metrics increasingly miss a growing share of how buyers actually encounter a brand. Visibility inside the generated answer itself — being mentioned, recommended and cited — becomes a metric worth tracking in its own right, not a proxy for traffic.
