GEO GLOSSARY

Answer engine

A system — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and similar tools — that generates a direct written answer to a question instead of returning a list of links to click through.

How it differs from a search engine

A search engine returns ranked links and leaves synthesis to the user. An answer engine reads across sources (or its own training) and hands back a finished paragraph, sometimes with citations, sometimes without. The user may never visit any of the underlying pages.

Why the distinction matters for a business

Being "findable" in a search index is no longer enough if buyers are increasingly asking answer engines directly. A page can rank well in traditional search and still never be quoted, cited or recommended by an answer engine — the two are measured, and won, differently.
