GEO GLOSSARY

Mention order (position bias)

Where a brand appears among the commercial brands listed in an AI answer — since names near the top of a list tend to get more attention and trust than names near the bottom.

Why order matters even when mention rate is equal

Readers give disproportionate weight to whatever comes first, a well-documented pattern in both search results and generated lists. A brand mentioned fifth in every answer is materially less visible than one mentioned first, even if both appear in the same number of answers.

How this gets scored

MagRank AI scores this as the reciprocal of first-mention position, averaged across successful answers, so a brand mentioned first scores higher than one mentioned third, with diminishing weight the further down the list it falls.
